What is Professional Supervision?
Professional Supervision can be defined as “a joint endeavor in which a practitioner, with the help of a supervisor, attends to their clients, themselves as part of their client-practitioner relationships and the wider systematic and ecological contexts, and by so doing improves the quality of their work, transforms their client relationships , continuously develops themselves, their practice and the wider profession” (Hawkins, 2020, p 67).
Additionally, Supervision is transformational (not just transmissional) i.e.; it results in a change of mindset, or behavior rather than simply being the transfer of ideas or knowledge alone”. This form of learning empowers the supervisee to reflect inwardly, and consider the “thinking behind the thinking” (Moon 1999) in order to reshape their understanding. (Michael Carroll, 2008, p 40)
My approach to Professional Supervision is about creating a personal and professional learning environment where a supervisee is able to be a better practitioner and support for their own work and clients (Sohet, 2011)
