My Approach to Professional Supervision
Supervision Models and Methods
Empowering Professional Supervision adopts two key approaches to Supervision
Each supervision relationship is unique and therefore requires a unique approach, which is why The Transformational model is adopted within our service to ensure an optimal learning space whereby the supervisee feels safe enough to be transparent and talk about their work. It is within this space that the use of critical reflection is adopted in order for the supervisee to learn more about themselves and their work in order to approach it from a empowered perspective. This supervision model focuses on critical reflection being the main avenue of learning and growth which enables unlearning old ways of learning and relearning.
Our focus at Empowering Professional Supervision is to shift from a supervisee simply debriefing what has happened, to facilitating an environment whereby a supervisee can transform the way they think about their work, and can therefore approach it from a different point of view. Supervisees are encouraged to reflect on their experience, learn from it and in doing so “create new mental maps or meaning making frameworks that help interpret their experience” (Carroll 2008 p. 44).
The method that Empowering Professional Supervision adopts during sessions is that of the CLEAR Model. Within this model a contract is established to ensure that all parties are in agreement with expectations from the beginning, this is to avoid any misunderstanding. Active listening is a key component in our practice in order to explore possible avenues through questioning and reflection so that a supervisee can have a better understanding of a plan of Action to move forward and approach the situation feeling empowered. Supervisees are encouraged to workshop these conversations within a safe and trusted environment in order to return to clients having learnt more about themselves, their clients and their work. Supervisees also have an opportunity to organise a follow up supervision session whereby they are able to debrief the course of action discussed and encouraged to provide feedback of what was helpful/unhelpful in the supervisory practice. I truly believe that “Supervision is a joint journey and works best where there is a shared model and framework” (Hawkins 2020, p 84).

Our Approach to the Supervisory Relationship
Our approach to the Supervisory Relationship is a supervisee focused approach endeavouring to facilitate a collaborative partnership with supervisees ensuring a cross-vocational perspective. Through the use of Reflexive Supervision, we recognise that there are benefits in holding space and conversations with the primary focus of learning regardless of coming from different professions.
